Fernando and Daniel Gutierrez - the most experienced Bowling World cup hosts!

1) You will soon welcome the World yet again to Hermosillo and Bol300. Having hosted twice before in 1994 and 2008 has planning been easy this time?

The 1994 and 2008 World Cups gave us a lot of very good experience in planning and organizing this 10 day event. It’s a one year program and if you do a good job, it goes smoothly and everything will be under control. This year has been the same hard work, the difference is that now we know how and how to program things in a better way. It’s not easier because there are always innovations that we want to make, some require investment decisions. We want to make bowlers feel good during their competition and we also want to offer other visitors more options to enjoy our city.

Una vez más, pronto darán la bienvenida a todos a Hermosillo y a Bol300. Habiendo ya albergado este evento dos veces en 1994 y 2008, ¿los preparativos se han hecho más fáciles esta vez?

Los torneos de 1994 y 2008 nos dieron una gran experiencia en cuanto al planeamiento y a la organización de este evento de 10 dias. Es una programa annual, y si haces un buen trabajo, todo está bien y bajo control. Este año también ha sido un arduo trabajo. Aunque ahora sabemos como planear mejor las cosas. No ha sido más fácil porque siempre hay innovaciones que queremos realizar, las cuales requieren inversión. Deseamos que los jugadores se sientan cómodos durante el evento y también queremos ofrecer a todos los visitantes más opciones para que disfruten de nuestra ciudad.

2) I believe many upgrades including the fantastic BESX have been made to Bol300, what new things have been introduced for customers and guests to enjoy this year?

For this tournament we will have a better communication system, we will have a TV station to transmit the best action in the competition. We are also working to get the best restaurant prices. We will of course have other surprises in the welcome reception, every night throughout the tournament week with a Fan Fest outside the bowling center and at the Victory Banquet.

Se han hecho muchas innovaciones al Bol300, incluyendo el increíble BESX. ¿Qué otras novedades se han hecho para que los clientes y visitantes disfruten este año?

Para este torneo, tendremos un mejor sistema de comunicación. Tendremos una estación televisiva que transmitirá lo mejor del torneo. También queremos poder ofrecer los mejores precios en los restaurants. Y por supuesto, tendremos también otras sorpresas en la fiesta de bienvenida y cada noche del torneo habrá un festival a las afueras del centro de bowling y en el Victory Banquet.

3) What does it mean to you as owners and the tournaments kind sponsors to host the 2017 event for a record third time?

For QubicaAMF it is very important to show the World their latest software innovations at the Bowling World Cup and to do it in our bowling center makes us very proud. Our first World cup in 1994 was held in Bol Satelite and our local bowlers as well as all Hermosillenses enjoyed it and remember it as the best sport competition ever. In fact there has never been any other world competition of any sport in our town. With that in mind we built Bol 300 and designed it with different floor levels as a small stadium and no structural columns that obstruct the lane visibility for spectators. WE BUILT BOL 300 SPECIALLY FOR WORLD CUPS. So if we have an opportunity in the future we would like to host many more World cups.

¿Qué significa para Uds, como dueños y como patrocinadores, albergar este evento en el 2017 por tercera vez?

Para QubicaAMF es muy importante mostrarle al mundo sus últimas innovaciones durante la Copa Mundial de Bowling, y el que lo hagan en nuestro centro de bowling nos hace sentir muy orgullosos. Nuestra primera Copa Mundial en 1994 tuvo lugar en Bol Satelite and nuestros jugadores locales así como todos los Hermosillenses lo disfrutaron mucho. Yo lo recuerdo como el mejor torneo deportivo de entonces. De hecho, no ha habido ninguna otra competición mundial de otro deporte en nuestro pueblo. Teniendo esto en cuenta, nosotro construimos Bol300 y lo diseñamos con diferentes niveles en la superficie, como un estadio pequeño, y sin columnas que pudieran obstaculizar la visibilidad de los espectadores. Construimos Bol300 especialmente para las Copas Mundiales. Por eso, nos encantaría poder albergar muchas más Copas Mundiales en un futuro.

4) Fernando, you were the best bowler in your city back in 1994. Whenever you went to the U.S. for business or on holiday, you visited every bowling center you could find. Where does this love for bowling come from?

I Started bowling 1n 1957 when I was 10 years old. I became a PIN BOY at 13 and when I was in High School I was so involved in bowling that I organized the first University league in Sonora.

Fernando, tú fuiste el mejor jugador de bowling de tu ciudad en 1994. Cada vez que visitaste los Estados Unidos, fuiste a cada centro de bowling que encontraste en tu camino. ¿De dónde viene este amor al bowling?

Empecé a jugar bolwing en 1957, cuando tenia 10 años. Me hice un PIN BOY cuando tenia 13 años y cuando estaba en la escuela secundaria, estaba ya tan involucrado en el bowling que organicé la primera liga universitaria en Sonora.

5) And how does someone successful in construction come to open their own bowling centre? Was it just that you were able to build and own one at last so why not?

By the time I graduated as a Civil Engineer I had 3 projects in mind:

a).- Study a major degree (MBA)
b).-Get construction experience to initiate with my own Company
c).- Work hard to build my own bowling center (an investment diversification in a business that I dreamed and that I would enjoy spending time in it)
Fortunately everything came out as planned.
By the time I graduated as a Civil Engineer I had 3 projects in mind:

Since 1986 I had the opportunity to travel, with my wife Maria Del Carmen, and a lot of times with my 4 young sons, to many cities in the US and visited all the bowling centers we could. My wife took pictures and notes of all the things that she liked and in a few years we had a very good idea of what we wanted.

We hired my brother Javier who is an Architect and he came out with a great project “Bol Satelite with 32 Lanes”. The Construction business was going good and by 1992  we were able to make the investment. We took advantage of the opportunity that our city, with a population of 600,000 had no bowling center at that time.

¿Cómo alguien exitoso en construcción llega a abrir su propio centro de bowling? ¿Se debió sencillamente a poder ser capaz de construirlo al fin?

Cuando me gradué de Ingeriero civil, tenia 3 proyectos en mente:

1. Hacer una Maestría (MBA)
2. Adquirir experiencia en construcción para iniciar mi propia compañía.
3. Trabajar duro para construir mi propio centro de bowling (inversión en un negocio en el cual habia soñado y en el cual disfrutaría invertir todo mi tiempo).

Afortunadamente, todo salió como planeado.

Desde 1986, tuve la oportunidad de viajar con mi esposa, María del Carmen, y muchas veces también con mis 4 hijos pequeños, a muchas ciudades en los Estados Unidos y visité todos los centros de bowling que pude. Mi esposa tomaba fotos y anotaciones de todas las cosas que a ella le gustaban y, en unos pocos años, ya teníamos una buena idea de lo que queríamos.

Contratamos a mi hermano, Javier, que es arquitecto, y se le ocurrió un gran Proyecto: “Bol Satelite con 32 líneas.” El negocio de construcción iba bien y para 1992 pudimos hacer la inversión. Aprovechamos la oportunidad de que en nuestra ciudad, de 600.000 habitantes, no había ningún centro de bowling en aquel entonces.

6) And Daniel what were your early experiences of the sport through your father?

I remember when I was a little kid, during the early 80´s, my father used to take us to a bowling center here in Hermosillo, when there was one and also in Tucson, Az. during the summer. He bowled, my brothers and I would just shoot just a few balls but we watched and kept scoring with the yellow pencils and the transparent plastic sheets. Besides that, my parents always kept sports as part of our education, so when we opened in 1994, it was really easy to start bowling. But it wasn´t until I graduated from college in 2001, that I took it serious, and it was also because my father invited me to get to know bowling business.

¿Y, Daniel, cuáles fueron tus previas experiencias del deporte a través de tu padre?

 Recuerdo que, cuando era pequeño, al principio de los 80s, mi padre solía llevarnos a un centro de bowling aquí en Hermosillo, cuando habia uno, y también en Tucson, Az, durante el verano. Mi padre jugaba y mis hermanos y yo sólo lanzabamos la bola un par de veces, pero nosotros observabamos y llevabamos el puntaje con los lápices amarillos y las hojas de papel transparentes. Además de esto, mis padres siempre mantenían el deporte como parte de nuestra educación, así que cuando abrimos en 1994, se nos hizo muy fácil jugar bowling. Pero no fue hasta cuando me gradué de la universidad en 2001, que lo empecé a tomar en serio. Fue también porque mi padre me invitó a familiarizarme con el negocio del bowling.

7) How has business been since your opening just before the 1994 World Cup, Has the sport become popular in Sonora state again over the years?

Bowling business  was great at the beginning but in 1995 our country suffered a severe economic drop with high inflation and interest rates over 140% per year. The slump was long lasting and it was until the beginning of this century that we had a good recovery. Then came 2008-2009 and the crisis hit our country again. The bowling business goes with the economy in Mexico, it has highs and lows. We like our business, we take care of it and we are always working hard in attracting new bowlers. So for us IT HAS BEEN A GREAT RIDE.

¿Cómo ha estado el negocio desde la apertura poco antes de la Copa Mundial en 1994? ¿El deporte se ha hecho popular en Sonora con el pasar de los años?

El negocio del bowling iba muy bien al principio pero en 1994 nuestro país sufrió una grave caída económica con tazas de interés por sobre el 140% por año. La depresión duró largo tiempo y no fue sino hasta principios de este siglo que pudimos recuperarnos bien. Pero luego la crisis en el 2008-2009 nos golpeó fuerte de nuevo. El negocio del bowling va a par con la economía en México, tiene sus altas y sus bajas. Nos gusta nuestro negocio, lo cuidamos bien y trabajamos duro para atraer a nuevos jugadores. Ha sido una gran experiencia.

8) Shanghai, China last year gained a home win in the men's competition, What would it mean to Mexicans to have a home win in Hermosillo?

In SONORA there are many male and female bowlers that could win the Mexican cup ‘COPA MEXICO”. We organize this tournament to create a better opportunity for our bowlers to win. We are expecting more then 70 local bowlers for this competition. BOL 300 would have a sell out and people will be very excited if one of our bowlers represents MEXICO. It would energize young bowlers and for our business would be great. The bowling level of our bowlers has increased a lot during these 23 years. Nowadays we have 2 bowlers that are members of the Mexican National Team with few others that have represented our country. 

En la Copa del año pasado, en Shanghai, China, un jugador local ganó la competencia en la categoría de los hombres. ¿Qué significado tendría para los mexicanos si ganara un jugador local en Hermosillo?

En Sonora, hay muchos jugadores y jugadoras que podrían ganar la Copa México. Organizamos ente torneo para crear mejores oportunidades para que nuestros jugadores puedan ganar. Esperamos que vengan mas de 70 jugadores locales en esta competencia. Se agotarían todas las entradas en el Bol300 y todos estarín muy emocionados si uno de nuestros jugadores representara a México. Esto daría mucho aliento a los jugadores más jóvenes y sería muy valioso para nuestro negocio. Durante estos 23 años, el nivel de nuestros jugadores ha subido mucho. Actualmente, tenemos dos jugadores que pertenecen al equipo mexicano nacional y varios que han representado nuestro país.

9) The Cathedral in Plaza Zaragoza, Mercado Municipal de Hermosillo, Musas, the Contemporary Art Museum are just some of the fantastic places to visit in Sonora state. What are your personal recommendations for visitors in 2017?

Besides the traditional sites, we recommend visitors to go to Bahia Kino (70 miles from Hermosillo) it’s a great beach that almost only Hermosillenses visit it. The natives of Bahia Kino are the Seris tribe. They are specialists in carving a wood named ‘Palo Fierro”, they have very nice artistic pieces that can be bought as souvenirs. The trophies for the World cup are going to be designed and made by them.

Hay muchos lugares maravillosos para visitar en Sonora como la Catedral en la Plaza de Zaragoza, el Mercado Municipal de Hermosillo, Musas y el Museo de Arte Contemporáneo. ¿Qué lugares recomendarías a los visitantes en 2017?

Además de los lugares tradicionales, nosotros recomendamos a los visitantes que vayan a la Bahía Kino (a 70 millas de Hermosillo). Es una playa muy buena que todos los Hermosillenses visitan. Los nativos de la Bahía Kino son de la tribu Seris. Ellos son especialistas en un tallado de madera llamado “Palo Fierro.” Tienen unas piezas artísticas muy lindas que venden como recuerdos para los turistas. Los trofeos de la Copa Mundial serán diseñados y hechos por ellos.

10) And food, Mexico is World famous for it, What dishes must bowlers, coaches and guests try in Bol300 and the city?

In Hermosillo the capital of the state of Sonora, We have the best steaks and seafood in our country. In our state, fishing and cattle raising are the primary economic activities that we have, so we eat fresh meat and seafood whenever we want. Nobody should miss having good dinners at our best restaurants and “Taquerias” (Street tacos).

¿Y la comida? México es famoso mundialmente por su comida. ¿Qué platos recomiendas a los jugadores, entrenadores y al público en Bol300 y en la ciudad?

En Hermosillo, la capital del estado de Sonora, tenemos la mejor carne de res y la mejor comida de mar de todo el país. En el estado de Sonora, la pesca y la ganadería son las actividades económicas principales de la región, así que siempre comemos la carne y los mariscos más frescos. No pueden perderse una buena comida en los restaurantes y taquerías.

11) Hosting a World Cup is a team effort, to do it once is amazing, twice is remarkable and three times unheard of and special. Who are the people and sponsors that make all this happen?

Hosting the World cup requires a great effort of a large group of people. We form committees with our staff combine with local bowlers that are in the state bowling association. Everyone likes to participate. Daniel is the tournament Director, and is coordinating over 103 people including Airport reception right through to the VIP dinner and with government and TV support. We are working to get the best support with sponsorships : state government (Governor Claudia Pavlovich Arellano) and city government (Major : Manuel Ignacio Acosta Gutierrez) plus many others. We are trying to involve everybody and we look forward to offer our sponsors a good projection in our community.
EVERYBODY FEELS HAPPY ABOUT THE WORLD CUP.

Albergar una Copa Mundial es un trabajo de equipo. Hacerlo por primera vez es increíble, hacerlo por segunda vez es extraordinario, y hacerlo por tercera vez es algo sin precedente y definitivamente algo muy especial. ¿Quién hace todo esto posible? 

Ser los anfitriones de la Copa Mundial requiere de un gran esfuerzo por parte de un gran grupo de personas. Formamos comités con nuestros empleados así como con jugadores locales que están en la asociación de bowling estatal. Todos quieren participar. Daniel es el director del torneo y está coordinando más de 103 personas, incluyendo el recibimiento en el aeropuerto, los banquetesVIP y el respaldo gubernamental y televisivo. Esperamos tener un gran respaldo de patrocinio con:

Los medios de comunicación, el gobierno estatal (Gobernadora Claudia Pavlovich Arellano) y el gobierno local (Alcalde Manuel Ignacio Acosta Gutierrez) y muchos otros. Queremos que todos se involucren y poder ofrecer a nuestros patrocinantes una buena proyección en nuestra comunidad.

12) Finally Fernando and Daniel, A simple question to end with, Why should people try bowling in your bowling centres?

Our bowling centers have a common denominator, they are Family, Recreational and competition centres. There is a space for everybody. We care about the family, about friendship and long term relationship with our clients. Some of our leagues have existed since the first year of operation (1993). The ladies league named Amas De Casa, has bowlers playing since the first edition of the league, this means that bowling is a very important part of their lives. Bowling friends form a great family in our city. They bowl to have fun, to socialize, to exercise and to compete, they do it no matter what the weather or the day of the week or the time it is.
THE BOWLING CENTER IS ALWAYS THERE FOR THEM.

Finalmente, Fernando y Daniel, una pregunta sencilla para culminar: ¿Por qué deberían las personal jugar bowling en sus centros de bowling?

Todos nuestros centros de bowling tienen un común denominador: todos son centros familiares, recreacionales y de competencia. Hay un lugar para todos. Cultivamos la familia, la amistad y la relación durarera con nuestros clientes. Algunas de nuestras ligas han existido desde el primer año de operación (1993). La liga de mujeres, llamada Amas de Casa, tiene personas que juegan desde la primera edición de la liga, lo que demuestra que el bowling es una parte importante de sus vidas. Amigos jugadores de bowling forman una gran familia en nuestra ciudad. Juegan bowling para divertirse, para socializar, para ejercitarse, para competir. Juegan sin importar que tiempo haga afuera, que dia de la semana sea o que hora sea.

El centro de bowling está siempre aquí para ellos.
