The Cut to the Top 24

After 20 grueling games, we finally reach the cut for the top 24 of the 52nd QubicaAMF Bowling World Cup. Local favorite Wang Hongbo is still in the lead on 4247. Bernice Lim of Singapore still holds the lead with 4470, but Danielle McEwan of USA is close behind in second with 4345

Sometimes it pays to wait and see what happens. Emmanuel Buenrostro of Mexico shot a 155 last game and was convinced he had missed the cut. He was about to leave, but he had actually made it, by 11 pins.

The player to miss out was Mohamed Al Saud of Saudi Arabia, who, as is clear from the photo took a phlegmatic view: “Well, that’s bowling. It happens!”

At the other end of the leader board, Petteri Salonen of Finland had a great day shooting 1110, the high set for the day, and moved up the table to 3rd  place. He was the only player to hit over 1100. High game for the day was 268 from Hengki of Indonesia.

Local favourite Wang Hongbo is still in the lead on 4247 with Martin Larsen of Sweden on 4220. Wang has been remarkably consistent, averaging 212.35 with a high game of just 247.

So now we know the top 24 men who will go forward to a further eight games tomorrow afternoon. They will be playing for a place in the top eight round robin and the cut for that at the moment is Anze Grabrijan of Slovenia, on 4096, a 204.8 average, with Michael Mak of Hong Kong in 9th on 4057.

The ladies then took to the lanes and Iliana Lomeli of Mexico just blitzed them, hitting the high 5-game set for the whole tournament, men or women, with 1200 (226-205-244-235-290).

This was in the first squad so she still had to wait to see exactly where she was going to qualify, but she could at least leave the centre, knowing she was safely in the top 24. The answer was 7th, with Bernice Lim of Singapore still in the lead on 4470. Danielle McEwan of the USA moved up into second on 4345 and Nadine Geissler of Germany on 4300 in third.

Both Bernice and Danielle hit over 1100 for their final five qualifying games.

Sabeena Athica of India bowled nice and steadily to move up from 30th into the coveted 24th place, leaving Joey Yip of Hong Kong just outside the qualified players.  Also in the top 24 is Zhang Yuhong of China, so China has players in both sections for the first time ever.

As with the men, the women will now be aiming for a spot in the top eight, currently a 207.7 average from Lara Posadas of the Philippines.

The women will be first up in the morning with the men in the afternoon.
